About the Jesus College Arts Research Fellowship 2027
Jesus College invites applications for two stipendiary Research Fellowships.
For the current competition, applications are accepted in the following disciplines:
• Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Studies
• Education Studies
• English
• Law
• Modern Languages
• Theology
The College seeks candidates with a strong research record and the potential to pursue research at a high level.
Fellowship Duration and Research Focus
The Arts Research Fellowship is a fixed-term appointment normally lasting three years from 1 October 2027.
Applicants must propose research they intend to pursue if elected. The College specifically asks candidates to propose a new project beyond the revision of their doctoral research.
The research statement should be accessible to scholars beyond the applicant’s own discipline.

Who Can Apply?
The fellowships are intended for researchers at an early stage of their careers.
Successful applicants are expected to be either:
• Graduate students, normally in the later stages of research leading to a PhD degree
• Postdoctoral researchers who have recently received their PhD degree
Candidates who have completed more than five years of full-time research are unlikely to be considered.
However, Jesus College states that exceptions may be considered. Applicants can present their case during the application process.
Fellowship Stipend and Benefits
The Research Fellow stipend is linked to the University of Cambridge salary scale. Step 35, currently £32,882, applies over the three-year fellowship, subject to increases in the salary scale.
Additional confirmed benefits include:

✓ A bench fee of approximately £12,000 per year, subject to annual review, for access to University Department facilities
✓ Free dinner or lunch for Research Fellows, whether they live in or outside the College
✓ Eligibility to join the University Pension Scheme
✓ Possible contribution toward university fees where appropriate
A Research Fellow may also be invited to undertake a small amount of undergraduate teaching during Term.
Other paid work, offices, or awards are not permitted without the permission of the College Council.

Application Requirements
Applicants must complete the online application and arrange for two referees’ reports to be submitted before the deadline.
A research statement is also required.
The statement must:
• Be no longer than 2,000 words
• Outline the work supporting the application
• Describe the research the applicant proposes to undertake if elected
• Present a new project beyond revision of doctoral research
• Be understandable to scholars outside the applicant’s own discipline
Written work is not required at the initial application stage.
Shortlisting and Further Assessment
Applicants shortlisted for further assessment will be contacted in November 2026.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit:
• One copy of selected written work
• A statement of 500 words explaining the importance of their current and proposed work
The College recommends that written work submitted for external assessment should not exceed approximately 40,000 words.
Submitted work does not need to be in final form. However, it must demonstrate originality and research promise.
Written work should normally be in English. Applicants intending to submit work in another language should indicate this in their application.
