OIST Research Internship Spring 2027 (No IELTS Required)

The OIST Research Internship Spring 2027 gives eligible students and graduates an opportunity to gain research experience under OIST faculty. The Spring 2027 internship period runs between April 1st and September 30th, 2027. Internships last from four to six months, and applications are due by October 15th, 2026 at 23:59 JST (UTC+9). IELTS or TOEFL scores are not required for the application.

About the OIST Research Internship Spring 2027

A research internship at OIST allows participants to work in a research environment directed by OIST faculty. The programme is intended for applicants who need additional research experience and are interested in potentially joining the OIST PhD Program later.

For the Spring 2027 round, OIST expects to announce results in mid-December 2026. The published schedule is tentative and may change.

Eligibility Requirements

OIST defines several academic routes through which applicants may qualify for the Research Internship.

• Students currently enrolled in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree may apply.
• Students enrolled in any year of a master’s degree may apply.
• Bachelor’s and master’s degree graduates may apply.
• Eligible students may attend universities, colleges, junior colleges or vocational schools in Japan or overseas.
• Applicants who will enter the final two years of their bachelor’s degree by the proposed internship start may also apply.
• Currently enrolled students must obtain approval from their home institution.
• The applicant’s academic background should be appropriate for the desired OIST host unit or units.
• Current PhD students and applicants who have already graduated with a PhD are not eligible.

Required Application Documents

Applications are accepted online. OIST requires application documents to be prepared in English and uploaded through the application website.

Applicants should prepare:

Transcript and Diploma: Current and previous academic transcripts and completed degree diplomas, where applicable. Applicants who have not graduated may submit a certificate of enrolment, preferably showing the expected graduation date.
Statement of Purpose: A statement of no more than 250 words or 1,500 characters explaining what the applicant hopes to accomplish at OIST and how the internship fits their career plans or aspirations.
Curriculum Vitae: A current CV covering academic background, research experience, skills and accomplishments.
Recommendation Letters: One to three letters in English from professorial-level faculty who can assess the applicant’s academic potential as a researcher. At least one recommendation must reach the system before the application can be submitted.
Passport: Passport number and a scan of the passport photo page. Applicants without a passport at the time of application may upload another government-issued identification document instead.
ID Photo: A recent front-facing photo taken within the previous three months.
English Proficiency Score: Optional.

English Proficiency Requirement

An IELTS or TOEFL score is not required for the OIST Research Internship application. However, applicants may upload an English proficiency score if they believe it will strengthen their application.

Application Fee

The Research Internship Program has a 5,000 JPY application fee. OIST states that the fee is non-refundable and that fee waivers are not currently offered for personal financial circumstances.

Applicants who experience payment difficulties because of international sanctions affecting their country are instructed to contact OIST and identify “Research Internship” as the reason for their enquiry.

How to Submit an Application

OIST accepts Research Internship applications online only. Applicants must first create an account through the application system. They can complete the application in one session or save their progress and return later.

Before submission:

• Prepare all required application documents in English.
• Save the required documents as PDF files where specified.
• Upload the documents through the online application system.
• Arrange for at least one eligible recommendation letter to be received through the system.
• Complete the required application information and fee payment.
