Country: Spain
Organization: ICIQ
Program Name: ICIQ Summer Fellowship Programme Call 2026
Category: Summer Fellowship / Internship
Deadline: March 22, 2026
Research Stay: June 1st to September 14th, up to 3 months
The ICIQ Summer Fellowship Programme Call 2026 invites national and international undergraduate students to join one of ICIQ’s research groups for a paid summer research experience. According to the official call, up to 10 fellowships are available, and selected students may carry out their internship between the months of June, July, August, and September.
About the Programme
The programme is offered by the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia and gives undergraduate students the chance to work in an advanced research environment in chemistry. The official call explains that fellows will learn, work, and live in an environment focused on cutting-edge research.
ICIQ states that fellows will be mentored and supervised by a PhD student or a postdoctoral researcher. During the fellowship, they will carry out research projects with scientists at the forefront of their fields, receive training, and attend ICIQ seminars and conferences. At the end of the internship, they must submit a short report and give a presentation on the work and results obtained.
The call also notes that the 2026 programme will be supported by the ICIQ Severo Ochoa CEX2024-001469-S grant funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033.
Who Can Apply
This call is addressed to undergraduate students with a background in Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, related disciplines, or other related areas. The source clearly says that applicants with different studies will not be considered.
Interested candidates should preferably be in their 3rd year or last year of undergraduate studies, or have completed 50% of their credits by the time of accepting the fellowship. Graduate students are not eligible.
The official page also includes an important note that, depending on nationality, selected candidates may need to obtain a student visa and should ensure that it is ready before the stay begins.
Financial Support
For the in-person stay at ICIQ, Summer Fellows will receive a stipend of 30€ per day, up to a maximum of 900€ per month. If a fellow completes part of the fellowship remotely with the supervisor’s agreement, no stipend will be paid for that period. When the stay is shorter than 3 months, the amount paid will be proportional to the time spent at ICIQ.
The source further states that for scholarship beneficiaries considered non-residents, the general withholding will be 24% under article 25 of the TRILNR. This withholding will be 19% for taxpayers resident in a Member State of the European Union or the European Economic Area.
Insurance
The programme requires fellows with nationalities outside the EU to obtain their own medical insurance for the entire stay at ICIQ. EU nationals must obtain their European Health Insurance card before coming to ICIQ.
Project Options
Applicants can apply to the research projects listed in the call. These are: Machine Learning Models for Materials in Energy; Computational Homogeneous Catalysis; Programmable Micromotors Powered and Guided by Light; Novel Synthetic and Mechanistic Tactics Using Earth-Abundant Transition Metal Catalysts; Gold(I) Cavitands for Catalytic Small-Molecule Activation; Materials for Energy; Multi-functional sensors to monitor bacterial biofilm growth; Dual Co/photo Catalysis for New Reaction Discovery; Molecular redox catalysts for the generation of solar fuels; and Electrolyte-driven wetting, flooding, and salt deposition in commercial gas diffusion layers for CO₂ electrolysis.
Documents
Candidates must submit a motivation letter, CV, and academic record through the application form. The motivation letter must state the applicant’s interest in joining ICIQ during the summer and also mention the available dates to start and finish the summer stage at ICIQ.
The academic transcript must cover the full Bachelor period and include the programme, university, dates, credits for each course, grades with the corresponding scale, and average if available. When the academic record is not issued in Catalan, Spanish, or English, a certified translation in one of those languages must also be included.
How to Apply
The official call states that only online applications submitted through ICIQ’s Career Portal will be considered. Applicants need to complete the application form and upload the required documents. The page also notes that candidates may select up to two research groups, but the first option will always be given priority during the selection process.
Evaluation
The selection process is carried out by an internal committee made up of the Summer Fellow project supervisor and supported by the Human Resources team. Applications are first reviewed for eligibility, and incomplete or non-compliant applications are rejected. The call explicitly says that no application can be modified and no missing documentation can be added after the deadline.
Candidates are evaluated on a merit basis using the motivation letter, academic record, and CV. All applicants will be informed of the result by the end of April. After successful candidates accept their offer, the final list of awardees will be published on the ICIQ website. The exact dates of the stay must be stated in the application, and the stay can begin from June 1st up to September 14th.
