AI Accountability Fellowships 2026–2027
This is the fifth cohort of the Pulitzer Center’s AI Accountability Fellowships. The programme focuses on in-depth journalism covering the real and human impacts of artificial intelligence.
The Pulitzer Center welcomes projects that investigate the opportunities and harms associated with AI systems. Proposals may also explore regulatory and labor issues or examine how automated systems affect communities.
Reporting Focus
Applicants may propose projects across different parts of the AI supply chain.
Reporting can investigate how AI systems are:
• Funded
• Built
• Deployed
• Used by corporations
• Used by governments
• Used by other powerful actors
The programme is designed for journalists reporting on the effects of algorithmic and automated systems in their communities.
Funding and Fellowship Benefits
Each selected fellow can receive up to $25,000.
The fellowship offers:

The fellowship includes support for an impact plan intended to help each investigation reach strategic audiences.
Depending on the project, engagement activities may involve:

• Outreach to online communities
• A zine for a local library
• Discussions involving civil society, industry, and government officials
Priority Applicants
Journalists from around the world can submit proposals.
The Pulitzer Center particularly encourages applications from:

Fellowship Commitments
Selected fellows are expected to collaborate actively throughout the programme.
Participants must:
• Attend a mandatory monthly meeting of 1.5 to 2 hours
• Contribute to at least one community call
• Engage with fellows through virtual meetings
• Use the community’s dedicated online platform
• Share reporting methodologies and lessons learned
Monthly virtual training sessions are also available, and fellows are encouraged to attend.
