AAUW American Short-Term Research Publication Grants provide $8,000 in funding to support women preparing research manuscripts for publication. About the AAUW American Short-Term Research Publication Grants

The American Short-Term Research Publication Grants are designed to help women prepare research manuscripts for publication. The grant supports work that may increase the likelihood of publication, including drafting, editing, modifying manuscripts, replicating research, and responding to issues raised through critical review.

The programme is open to applicants in all fields of study. AAUW especially encourages applications from those working in science, technology, engineering, and math fields, as well as those researching gender issues.

Grant Amount and Allowable Activities

Selected grantees receive a grant amount of $8,000. The official award details state that the grant is disbursed in a single tranche at the beginning of the award term.

Confirmed allowable activities include:

✓ Drafting manuscripts
✓ Editing manuscripts
✓ Modifying manuscripts
✓ Replicating research
✓ Responding to issues raised through critical review
✓ Other work that increases the likelihood of research publication

Grantees may also use funds to defray living expenses during the award term, including housing, food, and other living expenses, including dependent care.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the core eligibility requirements stated by AAUW.

• Applicants must identify as a woman.
• Applicants must hold a Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., M.F.A., J.D., M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M., D.S.W., or M.P.H. at the time of application.
• Applicants must be listed as the sole author, first author, or an author of equivalent significance on their publication.
• Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Tenured professors are not eligible for consideration.

Disqualifying Factors

AAUW lists several categories that are not eligible for consideration.

Applicants are not eligible if they are:

• Current members of the AAUW Board of Directors
• Employees of AAUW
• Current AAUW Review Panelists
• Immediate family members of individuals in the listed AAUW roles
• Applicants for another national AAUW fellowship or grant in the same year
• Previous national AAUW fellowship or grant recipients, except Community Action Grants or branch or local AAUW awards
• Tenured professors

Applicants recommended for an award may also be disqualified if their manuscript is different from the one envisioned at the time of application.

Selection Criteria

Applications are reviewed based on academic, research, professional, and service-related criteria.

Selection criteria include:

• Scholarly excellence shown through academic achievements, original research, recognition, or other distinctions
• Original research design with significant contribution to the relevant field
• Feasibility of the manuscript preparation plan, timeline, and budget
• Applicant work experience, including researcher roles
• Active commitment to helping women and girls through service in communities, professions, or research fields

Preferred criteria include work in STEM fields, research on gender issues, demonstrated resilience in overcoming life challenges, first-generation bachelor’s degree status, and applicants who lead or come from single-parent households.

Required Application Materials

Applicants must submit all required materials with their application.

Required materials include:

• Two letters of recommendation
• Proof of degree
• Official transcript confirming degree conferral
• Certified English translations for materials provided in a foreign language, where applicable

Recommendation letters should come from advisors, professors, colleagues, or others who are academically or professionally familiar with the applicant, their work, professional qualifications, and academic background.

AAUW does not accept references from dossier services, and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection Process

Grants are awarded on a competitive basis. AAUW’s Fellowships & Grants team first reviews applications for completeness and eligibility compliance.

Eligible and complete applications are then reviewed by panels of distinguished scholars and experts. The review panels cover Arts and Humanities, Natural and Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

Panel recommendations are subject to final approval by AAUW. Only complete applications that meet all eligibility criteria are considered.

• First stipend dispersed: July–September 2027
• Mid-year report due: December 2027
