The INGSA-Africa Science Advice Skills Development Program 2026–2027 supports early- and mid-career African scientists and researchers who want to strengthen their science-advice and policy-engagement skills. The six-month programme combines virtual training, one-to-one mentoring, practical assignments, and a closing workshop. Applications must be submitted by 17 August 2026.

About the Science Advice Skills Development Program
The Science Advice Skills Development Program is entering its fifth cohort. INGSA-Africa established the initiative to strengthen African researchers’ ability to translate research, evidence, and professional expertise into useful contributions to policymaking.
Participants will develop practical skills for communicating scientific findings to policymakers, stakeholders, civil society, the media, and wider audiences. The programme also aims to strengthen connections between research and public decision-making in Africa.
Programme Focus Areas
The programme focuses on inclusive growth and sustainable development in Africa. Preference will be given to applicants whose work relates to areas such as:
• Health
• Water
• Energy
• Food security
• Biodiversity
• Natural resource management
• Indigenous knowledge
• Digital and artificial intelligence innovations
Applicants from other relevant research areas may also be considered under the programme’s broader focus.

Programme Structure
The programme begins with a virtual introductory workshop in October 2026. During this session, mentees will meet their mentors and receive an introduction to science advice and the SASDP.
Participants will then enter a one-to-one virtual mentoring phase lasting up to six months. Mentees will be paired with mentors according to their expertise and interests.
The programme includes:

✓ Progress meeting with programme coordinators
✓ Possible online lectures on technical aspects of science advice
✓ Closing workshop in April 2027
✓ Networking among mentees, mentors, and the INGSA-Africa community
The programme is conducted in English. However, Francophone and Lusophone candidates are encouraged to apply. INGSA-Africa will consider connecting them with language-appropriate mentors.
Learning Outcomes and Participant Outputs
Mentees will work with their assigned mentors to develop a science-advice document relevant to their organization or field of expertise.
Possible outputs include:

By completing the programme, participants are expected to improve their ability to translate research into clear and accessible formats. They will also develop strategies for engaging policymakers and adapting scientific messages for different audiences.
Potential incentives for participants who produce strong outputs may include funding support for dissemination events or invitations to participate in scientific events organized by INGSA-Africa. These incentives are not presented as guaranteed benefits.

Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the programme’s academic, professional, and regional eligibility conditions.
• Be an early- or mid-career African scientist or researcher working on the African continent
• Have obtained a PhD within the past ten years
• Demonstrate a strong interest in science advice and policy engagement
• Have a solid scientific track record in their area of expertise
• Be able to participate in the programme’s virtual activities
• Have reliable internet access and the technology needed for online participation
Candidates may apply directly or be nominated by an eligible organization. Self-nominations are accepted.
Mentee Responsibilities
Selected mentees must participate actively throughout the programme.
Their responsibilities include:
• Attending the introductory and closing workshops
• Participating in the progress-reporting meeting
• Attending scheduled mentoring meetings
• Working with the mentor to shape the mentoring plan
• Submitting a mid-programme report in December 2026
• Preparing a final science-advice document
• Completing the programme feedback form
• Organizing a dissemination activity within their institution or organization after the programme
The final science-advice output will be presented during the closing workshop in April 2027.
Selection Process
Applications will be assessed according to the applicant’s research experience and achievements. Reviewers will consider public outputs such as publications, reports, and contributions to policy-related initiatives.
Applicants must also explain how they intend to apply their existing research outcomes within the programme. Final selection may include an interview.
Selected mentees will be notified and invited to attend the virtual introductory workshop in October 2026.

• A recent curriculum vitae
• A recommendation letter from a science organization, such as a university, research centre, or national academy of science, when the applicant has been nominated
