About the Google Play Africa Indie Games Fund 2026
The programme is the first Google Play Indie Games Fund created specifically for Africa. It addresses the funding gap that can prevent promising independent studios from expanding their businesses and improving their games.
Google Play aims to help selected studios strengthen their operations and bring their work to wider audiences. The programme focuses on developers who have moved beyond the concept stage and already released a playable game.

Funding and Support for Selected Studios
Google Play has committed a total of $1 million to the programme. Ten selected studios will each receive an award based on their project, business, and development needs.
Confirmed support includes:
✓ Funding ranging from $50,000 to $200,000 per selected studio
✓ Equity-free financial support
✓ Dedicated mentorship
✓ Hands-on technical support
✓ Guidance intended to help studios scale their businesses
✓ Support for improving games and reaching wider audiences
The funding is designed to help established indie developers continue developing their games while retaining control of their businesses.
Who Can Apply?
The fund is intended for independent game developers based in eligible Sub-Saharan African markets.
Applicants must have already launched a game on at least one of the following platforms:
• Google Play
• Another mobile platform
• PC
• Console
The programme is therefore not intended for applicants who only have an undeveloped game idea. The applicant studio must have an existing game that has already been released to players.

Eligible Location
Applicants must be based in one of the eligible Sub-Saharan African countries identified on the official programme page.
Studios should review the official country list before preparing an application. Being located elsewhere in Africa does not automatically establish eligibility because the programme applies a specific market list.
What Google Play Is Looking For
The fund focuses on promising independent studios that are ready to grow. Applicants should be able to present an existing game and explain how financial, technical, and mentoring support would help advance their work.
A competitive application should clearly describe:
• The studio and its development team
• The game that has already been launched
• The platform or platforms where the game is available
• The studio’s plans for improving or expanding the game
• How the requested support would help the business grow
• The audience the studio intends to reach
Applicants should ensure that every statement in the application accurately represents the current stage of the game and studio.
Programme Purpose
Google Play created the fund to help African indie studios overcome barriers related to early-stage capital and business growth.
The programme seeks to support developers who can use the funding and technical guidance to:
✓ Improve existing games
✓ Strengthen development capabilities
✓ Expand studio operations
✓ Reach new players
✓ Build a stronger foundation for long-term growth
The programme combines financial support with direct engagement from Google Play. Selected studios will therefore receive both funding and practical assistance.
