About the Africa-China Relations Training Workshop 2026
The workshop is titled “Building Capacity to Cover a Complex Story – Africa and China relations.” It focuses on strengthening journalists’ ability to report critically and in depth on the multiple dimensions of Africa-China relations.
The Media Foundation for West Africa is organizing the workshop in partnership with the South Africa-based Wits Centre for Journalism. The workshop is funded by the University of Witwatersrand and is scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, in the last quarter of 2026.

Programme Purpose and Focus
The workshop aims to help journalists better understand Africa-China relations within an increasingly multipolar global setting. It will address how these developments affect African communities and development.
The training will offer both subject-matter knowledge and journalism techniques. The official page highlights several areas linked to China’s engagement across Africa, including trade, infrastructure, development financing, natural resources, technology, labour, governance, and international cooperation.

Story Grants and Further Opportunities
Beyond the training, participating journalists will have the opportunity to apply for reporting grants. These grants are intended to support the production and publication of in-depth stories on Africa-China relations and related issues.
The official page also states that three excelling journalists may receive a fully-funded opportunity to participate in the Africa Investigative Journalism Conference. The conference is scheduled for 10–12 November 2026 in Kenya, where selected journalists may speak about their stories.

Who Can Apply?
Applications are invited from journalists who meet the criteria stated by the Media Foundation for West Africa.
• Applicants must be based in an Anglophone West African country, namely Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, or The Gambia.
• Applicants must work in print, radio, television, or digital media.
• Applicants should report on areas such as politics, economy, business, trade, development, environment, extractives, infrastructure, or international affairs.
• Applicants must be available in the last quarter of 2026, specifically September–October.
• Applicants must be able to secure a formal permission letter from their editor to participate fully in the training workshop in Accra.
• Applicants must be able to produce in-depth stories after completing the training.
