About the Blue Book Traineeship Programme
The Blue Book Traineeship programme gives participants direct professional experience within the European Commission and participating EU bodies.
Trainees work in a multicultural and multilingual environment while gaining insight into EU institutional operations. The programme offers approximately 1,000 traineeship positions per session and runs two sessions each year.
Participants may be placed in Commission departments, executive agencies, Commissioners’ Cabinets, other services, or decentralised agencies.
The experience is designed to help trainees apply academic or vocational knowledge in a professional environment while developing practical workplace skills.
Available Traineeship Types
The European Commission offers three Blue Book traineeship routes.
• Administrative Traineeship for University Graduates (ADMIN UG): Provides practical experience in office operations, organisational functions, and administrative tasks.
• Administrative Traineeship for Vocational Education and Training Graduates (ADMIN VET): Focuses on work-based learning connected to the trainee’s vocational skills and field of training.
• Translation Traineeship (TRA): Provides experience translating documents into the trainee’s native language from at least two official EU languages.

What Trainees Receive
The Blue Book Traineeship is paid. Financial support depends partly on the trainee’s place of assignment and individual circumstances.
Confirmed support includes:

The exact financial amount may therefore differ depending on the location of the traineeship and the allowances for which the trainee qualifies.
Where Trainees May Be Placed
Most trainees work in European Commission departments, executive agencies, and Commissioners’ Cabinets.
Placements are also available in other services and decentralised agencies. Trainees work mainly in Brussels, although positions may also be based in Luxembourg and elsewhere across the European Union.

Who Can Apply?
The programme is available to eligible candidates from European Union Member States.
A limited number of traineeship places are also allocated to eligible non-EU nationals from countries benefiting from a pre-accession strategy.
Eligibility requirements differ according to the selected traineeship route. Candidates should therefore review the requirements for ADMIN UG, ADMIN VET, or TRA before submitting an application.
How the Application and Selection Process Works
Applications for Blue Book traineeships are organised twice each year.
Applicants should:
• Select one traineeship type for the relevant session.
• Complete the online application.
• Submit all supporting documents together with the application form in one PDF file.
• Ensure that the documents support the information declared in the application.
Applications are assessed according to academic background, language skills, and other relevant skills and experience.
Eligible pre-selected candidates are added to the Virtual Blue Book. At that stage, candidates may apply for up to three specific traineeship positions.
Recruiting services may contact candidates and arrange interviews. Final selection is confirmed only when the official placement offer appears in the candidate’s account.
