About the Monash University Malaysia Postgraduate Research Scholarships 2026
Monash University Malaysia provides several scholarship routes for students undertaking graduate research degrees. The financial support and eligibility requirements differ according to the scholarship selected.
The Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship combines a full tuition fee waiver with a monthly stipend. The Graduate Research Tuition Fee Waiver Scholarship provides tuition support at different percentage levels. Meanwhile, GEMS combines doctoral funding with a study-away period at a participating institution.

Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship
The Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship, or GRES, is available to new graduate research students enrolling at Monash University Malaysia. Current graduate research students in their first year of enrolment may also be considered.
Each scholarship provides:
✓ A full tuition fee waiver
✓ A monthly stipend of MYR2,950 at the 2026 rate
✓ Support for two years of full-time-equivalent study for a research master’s degree
✓ Support for three years and six months for a doctoral degree, ending earlier if the thesis is submitted before the scholarship end date
Scholarships are awarded competitively. Monash University Malaysia assesses applicants using their academic records, research outputs and previous research experience.
GRES recipients must contribute up to 240 hours each year to academic or research support activities determined by their managing school.
Graduate Research Tuition Fee Waiver Scholarship
This scholarship is available to new graduate research students enrolling at Monash University Malaysia. Current graduate research students in their first year of registration may also qualify.
Successful recipients may receive:
✓ A 50% tuition fee waiver
✓ A 75% tuition fee waiver
✓ A 100% tuition fee waiver
✓ Tuition support for up to two years for a research master’s degree
✓ Tuition support for up to three years and six months for a doctoral degree, or until thesis submission if earlier
The scholarship may be awarded after an application has been processed and the applicant receives an offer letter for a higher degree by research. Applicants may also be contacted by their school for an interview.

Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship
The Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship, known as GEMS, supports PhD students at Monash University Malaysia. The programme offers 15 scholarships each year, with funding provided for 42 months.
GEMS includes a study-away period of up to nine months at one of the following institutions:
• Monash University Australia
• Monash University Indonesia
• Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
GEMS Funding and Benefits
The scholarship package includes:
✓ A monthly stipend of RM2,950 for 33 to 36 months in Malaysia
✓ A monthly stipend of RM8,500 for up to nine months in Australia
✓ A monthly stipend of RM2,950 for up to nine months in Indonesia or India
✓ A grant of RM9,000 to subsidise visa, insurance and travel costs
✓ Possible funding for conferences, fieldwork or other research-related activities, depending on the school of enrolment
✓ A 100% tuition fee waiver for up to four years of full-time-equivalent study
At the 2026 fee rates, the tuition fee waiver is valued at RM218,880 for international students and RM193,920 for domestic students.
GEMS recipients must contribute up to 240 hours per year to academic or research support activities. They must begin their mobility period no later than 18 months after commencing their degree. Successful recipients must also begin in the year the scholarship is awarded and no later than December 2026.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility requirements depend on the scholarship category.
Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship
Applicants must:
• Hold First Class Honours, or an equivalent qualification recognised by Monash University Malaysia
• Meet the academic, English-language and scholarship requirements for the relevant research degree
• Be enrolled or hold an offer to study at Monash University Malaysia
• Not have completed a graduate research master’s or doctoral degree at the same level as the proposed degree
Graduate Research Tuition Fee Waiver Scholarship
Applicants must:
• Hold Second Class Honours Division A, or an equivalent qualification recognised by Monash University
• Not have completed a graduate research master’s or doctoral degree at the same level as the proposed degree
• Meet the relevant scholarship requirements
Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship
The GEMS scholarship is available to Malaysian and international students.
Applicants must:
• Hold First Class Honours, or an equivalent qualification recognised by Monash University Malaysia
• Apply for an eligible PhD programme
• Meet the additional eligibility requirements published by the university
Applicants receiving financial assistance from an external sponsor must obtain approval from the Scholarship Office. Both Monash University Malaysia and the external sponsor must agree that their conditions do not conflict.

How to Submit an Application
New students apply through the admission application for their preferred graduate research degree. During the application, they can select the relevant scholarship type. A separate scholarship application is not required.
Current graduate research students may apply for GRES once during their first year of candidature. They should discuss the application with their supervisor before submitting the official form.
Before applying for GEMS, candidates are advised to contact the principal supervisor responsible for their preferred GEMS research topic. Applicants should provide information about their academic background and achievements so the supervisor can assess their suitability for the project.
Scholarship Application Deadlines
Monash University Malaysia lists four GRES scholarship rounds for 2026:
• Round 1: 13 February 2026
• Round 2: 30 April 2026
• Round 3: 31 July 2026
• Round 4: 1 October 2026
Applicants must have received their higher degree by research offer letter by the relevant date to be considered for that scholarship round. Schools may contact applicants for an interview.
The Graduate Research Tuition Fee Waiver Scholarship may be awarded after the application has been processed and the applicant has received an offer letter. The official page does not list a separate fixed deadline for this scholarship.
