The Macquarie University International Scholarship Round supports eligible international graduate researchers applying for Session 1, 2027. The round covers the International Research Training Program scholarship and the International Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship Program for Master of Research and Doctor of Philosophy study. About the Macquarie University International Scholarship Round 2027
The International Research Training Program, known as iRTP, is the Australian Government’s Research Training Program scholarship scheme for international graduate research students. Participating universities administer the scheme on behalf of the Department of Education.
The International Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship Program, or iMQRES, is funded by Macquarie University. It supports exceptional international graduate research students working in priority areas aligned with the university’s research strategy. Applicants considered for iRTP are automatically considered for iMQRES during the same round.

Funding and Covered Support
Successful PhD applicants awarded an iRTP scholarship receive:
✓ A tuition fee offset for a maximum of three years
✓ A living allowance stipend for up to three years
✓ An annual stipend of $39,700 at the 2026 rate
✓ A travel concession applied to their local transport OPAL card
Successful PhD applicants awarded an iMQRES scholarship receive:
✓ A tuition fee offset for a maximum of three years
✓ A living allowance stipend for up to three years
✓ An annual stipend of $39,700 at the 2026 rate
Applicants who do not meet the PhD admission criteria may receive a counter-offer for entry to the Master of Research with a provisional three-year PhD. Competitively ranked applicants may also receive a scholarship covering the MRes portion of the programme.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the conditions stated by Macquarie University at the time of application.
• Be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand
• Not be an Australian permanent resident
• Intend to reside in Sydney, Australia, during the candidature
• Plan to undertake a full-time MRes or PhD in Session 1, 2027
• Meet the relevant MRes or PhD admission criteria
• Meet the English-language requirement for a Macquarie University research degree
• Satisfy all other admission requirements established by the university
• Have a valid visa that allows onshore study to begin in Session 1, 2027
• Obtain confirmation of supervision from an eligible Macquarie University researcher where required
Confirmation of supervision is compulsory for applicants to FOA, FMHHS and FSE. It is desirable for applicants to MQBS.
MRes applicants must have completed their degree before applying. Students in the final semester are not eligible, except for Macquarie University applicants.
PhD applicants must also have completed their degree. Final-semester applicants are not eligible, except for Macquarie University applicants and applicants applying to MQBS.

Who Is Not Eligible?
Awards are not available to applicants who:
• Are currently enrolled in a progressing Macquarie University research cohort
• Began a Macquarie University graduate research programme before 1 July 2026
• Receive an equivalent major award, full tuition-and-stipend scholarship or salary for the proposed programme
• Have completed a research degree at the same or a higher level in the same programme of study
• Submit false or misleading information
• Submit an incomplete application
Incomplete applications will be withdrawn. Applications cannot be transferred to a future scholarship round. Candidates who miss the deadline must apply again during a later round.
Selection Process
Macquarie University ranks applicants according to academic merit, relevant research output, research experience or potential, and alignment with the university’s research strategy.
The university may also consider:
• Alignment between the proposed project and Macquarie University’s research priorities
• The quality of the proposed supervisory team
• The international standing of the research area
• The comparability of overseas qualifications with the Australian Qualifications Framework
Applicants should provide complete documentation of their qualifications and achievements. Relevant evidence may include a research master’s degree, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and substantial research-related professional experience.

How to Submit an Application
Applicants must follow Macquarie University’s graduate research application process and select International Research Scholarship as the scholarship type.
Candidates should:
• Confirm that they meet the relevant research-degree admission requirements
• Secure confirmation of supervision where required
• Prepare complete documentation supporting their qualifications and research achievements
• Select International Research Scholarship in the application
• Submit the complete application before the stated deadline
Applicants who commenced a Macquarie University graduate research programme in Session 2, 2026 only, or received a valid Macquarie University PhD offer within the previous six months, must submit a graduate research Scholarship Only application.

Applicants who have not received an outcome notification by 15 November 2026 should consider their application unsuccessful.
