The Tokyo Arts and Space Residency Programme 2026–2027 is a Tokyo-based opportunity for creators, curators, and researchers. It offers three separate residency tracks, so applicants can select the programme that fits their creative or research practice.
About Tokyo Arts and Space Residency Programme 2026–2027
Tokyo Arts and Space lists three residency programmes for the 2026–2027 cycle. These programmes support work, research, and presentation in Tokyo.
The International Creator Residency Program focuses on creation. The Curator Residency Program focuses on curatorial research. Meanwhile, the Research Residency Program supports research on arts and culture in Tokyo.
Programme Options
International Creator Residency Program invites international creators in visual art, film, design, and architecture. Selected creators work in Tokyo and present the residency result at the Open Studio and/or Result Presentation at TOKAS Hongo.
Curator Residency Program invites international curators in curation, art criticism, and cultural research. Curators conduct research in Tokyo. In addition, they give mentoring sessions to local emerging creators and deliver a public talk.
Research Residency Program supports international and Japan-based creators. It focuses on arts and culture research in Tokyo. Eligible fields include visual art, film, design, architecture, music, sound art, performing art, and curation.
Stay Period and Duration
Each track has a different stay length.
• International Creator Residency Program: 3 months
• Curator Residency Program: 1 to 3 months
• Research Residency Program: 6 to 12 weeks
All programmes are scheduled within the same three residency windows.
• Beginning of May to end of July 2026
• Beginning of September to end of November 2026
• Beginning of January to end of March 2027
TOKAS decides the final residency period. Therefore, selected applicants cannot choose the period themselves.

The number of selected participants is limited.
• International Creator Residency Program: 6 creators in total
• Curator Residency Program: 6 curators in total
• Research Residency Program: 5 creators in total
For the International Creator and Curator programmes, TOKAS lists 2 selected participants per period.
Residency Support
TOKAS provides different support for each programme.
✓ International Creator Residency Program: airfare, living expenses, creative work/project fee, single-room living space, and shared studio
✓ Curator Residency Program: airfare, research/project fee, and single-room living space
✓ Research Residency Program: single-room living space
The official pages state that the Curator and Research Residency programmes do not provide studio or workspace.
Who Can Apply
The FAQ confirms that there is no age limit for the listed programmes. However, applicants must follow the specific rules for their chosen track.
• International Creator applicants finishing a master’s degree soon are eligible only if they are not students during participation and have 5 or more years of experience
• Curator applicants finishing a master’s degree soon are eligible only if they are not students during participation and have 3 or more years of experience
• Research Residency applicants finishing a master’s degree soon are eligible only if they are not students during participation and have considerable experience
• Duo applications are allowed for the International Creator and Research Residency programmes
• Duo applications are not allowed for the Curator Residency Program
• Writers may apply for the Research Residency Program
Previous TOKAS residents should check the track-specific restrictions. Some applicants cannot apply again for the same programme.
How to Submit
Applicants must download the relevant Outline and Application Package. After that, they complete the materials and send the application to TOKAS Residency.
Applicants may apply for multiple residency programmes at the same time. However, they must complete the required application forms for each programme and send them together.
