The IWW Writers-in-Residence Programme 2027 is a residency opportunity for writers who live outside Hong Kong and meet the publication and language requirements. Hosted by the International Writers’ Workshop at Hong Kong Baptist University, the programme runs for four weeks and concludes with the IWW Literary Festival on the theme “Inheritance.”
About the Residency
The International Writers’ Workshop was founded at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2004. Since then, it has hosted over 150 writers from more than 60 countries.
For 2027, the residency will take place from 26 February to 25 March. Moreover, the programme will lead into the IWW Literary Festival. Applicants are encouraged to connect their work to the festival theme, but this connection is not required.
Programme Support
IWW lists the following support for selected writers:
✓ Roundtrip economy class airfare
✓ Four weeks of accommodation on HKBU’s campus
✓ A per diem
Who Can Apply
The programme is open to writers who meet these conditions:
• The writer must have at least one literary book published with a press
• Self-published books do not qualify
• The applicant must currently live outside Hong Kong
• The applicant must have a functional command of English or Chinese, including Mandarin or Cantonese
Participation Rules
Selected writers must commit to the full programme period. They must also join the required residency activities.
• Attend the residency from 26 February 2027 to 25 March 2027
• Join the Welcome Ceremony during the first week
• Take part in the Literary Festival during the final week
• Writers are encouraged to share a writing piece in conversation with the festival theme
IWW Writers-in-Residence Programme 2027 Application Materials
Applicants need to submit the required documents in one complete PDF file.
• A one-page, single-spaced Artist’s Statement in English or Chinese
• A one-paragraph English summary if the Artist’s Statement is written in Chinese
• 10–12 pages of recent work
• English or Chinese translation if the original work is not in English or Chinese
• CV or resume
• Contact details and email addresses of two referees
• Materials formatted in 12-point type with 1-inch margins
The recent work sample may include creative nonfiction, digital writing, drama, fiction, graphic forms, libretti, or poetry.
Submission and Result Notification
Applicants must email the single PDF application file to iww@hkbu.edu.hk by 14 August 2026. Then, applicants will receive the results by November 2026.
