The 2026 National Taiwan Library Fellowship is an academic opportunity for international visiting scholars whose research falls within Taiwan Studies or Southeast Asian Studies. It supports research at the National Taiwan Library and is intended to strengthen scholarly exchange between the Library and foreign institutions.
About the 2026 National Taiwan Library Fellowship
According to the announcement, this fellowship was created to encourage and support experts and scholars from foreign universities or research institutes in conducting academic research at the Library. The eligible research projects must primarily belong to the humanities and social sciences.
Research Scope and Applicant Profile
The fellowship is limited to research topics in Taiwan Studies or Southeast Asian Studies. As a result, applicants should make sure their proposed project fits within those subject areas before applying.
Eligible applicants include academic staff in relevant departments of foreign universities, such as professors, associate professors, assistant professors, lecturers, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and Ph.D. students. The announcement also includes library personnel and researchers of equivalent rank at related academic institutions.
Applicants outside that category may still apply if they are recommended by an institution that has signed an international academic cooperation memorandum of understanding with the Library and if their research aligns with the approved fields. Meanwhile, those already engaged in research, teaching, or studies in Taiwan cannot apply.

Submission Materials and Online Application
The application must be submitted online only. The Library does not accept paper applications. In addition, incomplete submissions are disqualified.
Applicants need to prepare the following materials:
• Online application form
• Curriculum Vitae, including publications list
• Research proposal, generally limited to three pages in Chinese or English
• Recommendation letter in PDF format, emailed by the referee to liao1108@mail.ntl.edu.tw by April 20, 2026
• Letter of approval from the highest administrative authority at the applicant’s home institution
The recommendation letter email must use the subject “Recommendation Letter for [Applicant’s Name].” The online application link remains available from the date of announcement until April 20, 2026.
Funding, Results, and Important Dates
The fellowship includes an airfare subsidy and a monthly research grant. One economy-class round-trip ticket on the most direct route to Taiwan will be reimbursed at actual cost for the awarded scholar. The maximum airfare support is NTD 35,000 for Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia, and NTD 60,000 for other regions.
For the monthly research grant, awardees with a doctoral degree receive NTD 60,000, while awardees without a doctoral degree receive NTD 40,000.
In principle, the program offers 1 to 3 primary awards and up to 2 alternate positions. However, the Library may adjust the number of awards or leave positions vacant depending on available funds and evaluation results.
The list of awardees will be announced on the Library’s website and the Taiwan Studies Research Center’s website by the end of April 2026, subject to the Library’s operational schedule. Awardees may then register between June 1, 2026 and June 30, 2026.
Fellowship Duration
The fellowship normally lasts 3 to 6 months. However, it cannot continue across years, and it cannot be deferred to the following year.
